Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo – [20.08.2026] – In a move to strengthen internet connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kinshasa Internet Exchange, or KINIX, has relocated its Internet Exchange Point (IXP) infrastructure to Raxio DRC, providing a more resilient and secure environment for digital networks.
The relocation positions KINIX within the country’s state-of-the-art carrier-neutral facility, enabling greater access for internet service providers, mobile network operators, carriers, enterprises, content providers, cloud platforms, academic networks, and digital service providers. Raxio data centres are designed to remain operational even during maintenance or equipment failures, minimising the risk of disruption to networks and services to a high standard known as Tier III.
Founded in 2012, KINIX is one of three community and neutral Internet exchange points of the RDC-IX project initiated and managed by the Internet Service Provider Association -DRC (ISPA-DRC). It allows different networks to exchange internet traffic directly rather than sending it through longer and more costly international routes, connecting at present more than 20 participating networks and providing over 1 terabit per second (Tbps) of available exchange capacity to support the country’s growing demand for digital services, cloud adoption, content delivery, and enterprise connectivity.
The relocation to Raxio DRC marks the next phase of KINIX’s evolution. Operating from a Tier III certified, carrier-neutral facility designed for high availability, resilient connectivity, and future growth will provide a stronger foundation for interconnection and the continued development of the DRC’s internet ecosystem. The move is expected to attract additional networks to connect directly and exchange traffic within DRC, further strengthening the country’s interconnection landscape and supporting continued expansion of the digital economy.
As more mobile network operators, internet service providers, content providers and enterprises connect to KINIX, local traffic exchange is expected to grow significantly, enhancing the efficiency, resilience and overall performance of the national Internet infrastructure, with the facility rapidly becoming the primary interconnection hub for the DRC.
The move reflects the growing role of carrier-neutral data centres in supporting national internet infrastructure. By bringing networks, cloud providers, content platforms and digital service providers together in a single resilient environment, Raxio DRC is helping create the conditions for greater interconnection, reduced costs, improved service quality and enhanced digital experiences for businesses and consumers across the country.
“This relocation represents an important milestone for KINIX and for the continued development of the internet in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said NICO TSHINTU ,KINIX’s operation director “Since its establishment, KINIX, the region’s first distributed internet exchange, has been committed to creating a neutral platform where networks can exchange traffic locally and contribute to the growth of the country’s digital ecosystem. By establishing our presence at Raxio DRC, we will strengthen KINIX’s reliability and resilience as an internet exchange platform, enabling it to increase its capacity to generate traffic exceeding 2 Tbps while bringing it closer to the digital networks and infrastructure that drive local and regional market growth. With the connection of more operators, service providers, and content platforms, we anticipate a significant increase in platform participation, resulting in improved performance, reduced latency, and an enhanced user experience in the DRC and other countries in the region.” In addition, this migration allows KINIX to meet one of its major challenges: “becoming a regional Internet eXchange in Central Africa” and attract several other networks operating in other continent regions.
Yannick Sukakumu, General Manager of Raxio DRC, commented: “Raxio is proud to support KINIX and the critical role it plays in advancing local interconnection across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Internet Exchange Points are fundamental to the development of strong national digital infrastructure. By hosting KINIX within Raxio DRC, we are providing a world-class carrier-neutral environment where networks can interconnect reliably and efficiently. Our vision is to create the digital home of the DRC, where networks, cloud providers, enterprises and content platforms can interconnect, collaborate, and scale with confidence. Hosting KINIX is a significant step towards building a stronger and more interconnected digital ecosystem for the country. As more networks connect within Raxio DRC, we expect to see increased local traffic exchange, improved service performance, and greater opportunities for innovation, investment, digital growth and market access across the DRC and the wider Central African region.”
As Africa’s digital economy continues to evolve, strong local interconnection remains essential to supporting cloud adoption, content delivery, digital inclusion and economic development. The relocation of KINIX to Raxio DRC reinforces the importance of resilient, carrier-neutral infrastructure in enabling a more connected, reliable, and digitally empowered Democratic Republic of the Congo.
