Luanda, Angola – October 2, 2025 – Raxio Group, the data centre operator with the widest footprint across Africa, today opened the biggest and most advanced facility in Angola. With capacity to deliver up to 3 megawatts of IT power and host over 800 server racks, Raxio Angola more than doubles the capabilities of any existing data centre in the country, while setting a benchmark for security and sustainability.

Raxio’s sixth data centre on the continent, the $30 million development is spread across 19,000 square metres—the biggest campus in the company’s portfolio—supporting plans to more than double the site’s capacity within five years to over 7MW. Designed to meet growing demand for high-performance, always-on digital infrastructure, Raxio Angola is the only commercial data centre in the country built to Tier III standards, a global benchmark that guarantees the facility can undergo maintenance without disrupting services.

“Raxio Angola represents a leap forward for our country’s digital economy,” said Mário Oliveira, Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication. “This significant investment supports Angola’s vision of becoming a regional technology leader and delivers real benefits for our people and businesses.”

Oliveira, who has championed the data centre project since its early stages, officiated at the opening of the facility today alongside senior officials from government and commerce.

Located in Cacuaco, Luanda Province, Raxio Angola is intentionally close to the region’s main undersea cable landing stations—the lifelines of the global digital economy. The facility will serve as the host site for Angola’s Internet Exchange Point (IXP)—allowing local internet traffic to stay in-country rather than routed internationally. This will dramatically improve internet speed, reliability and cost-efficiency for users across Angola.

Powered by two independent dedicated substations plus backup from two large generators, UPS devices and batteries, Raxio Angola ensures uninterrupted service even in the event of energy failures, enabling disaster recovery and business continuity. This built-in redundancy combined with engineering precision positions it as a Tier III “plus” data centre, says Maria Miguel Pinto, who became Raxio Angola’s General Manager this month, having led IBM’s operations in the country.

“Raxio Angola marks a turning point for the country’s digital economy,” said Pinto. “By bringing world-class infrastructure, we are unlocking faster, more reliable internet and creating the conditions for Angola’s future competitiveness and digital independence.”

While optimising efficiency, Raxio Angola has been designed to minimise environmental impact. The facility uses energy-efficient cooling and electrical systems and is 70% powered by renewable energy. It also features an on-site water treatment plant, which recycles and reuses water for non-potable functions including—most critically given the intense heat generated within data centres—a sustainable source for regulating equipment temperatures, along with additional uses such as irrigation. These features make Raxio Angola not only the most capable, but also the most environmentally responsible data centre in the region.

Through its secure, high-capacity infrastructure, Raxio Angola enables world-class local hosting for critical systems, removing the need for costly overseas services while assuring robust data protection. As a carrier-neutral co-location facility, customers retain flexibility and cost savings through interconnecting with multiple network and internet service providers.

Raxio Group customers range from government agencies and mobile network operators to multinationals and startups. “I was one of the first supporters of the Raxio data centre in Angola, as it will bring added value to the ecosystem and enhance the resilience of the existing infrastructure,” said Faissal Abdallah, an independent technology consultant who has served in roles including Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Africell Angola.

By enabling this technology-led ecosystem, Raxio Angola is directly creating high-value technical and operational jobs for Angolans while contributing to local capacity building and a core of skilled professionals to power the expanding digital economy.

“This facility is truly a game-changer for Angola,” said Robert Skjødt, CEO of Raxio Group. “It’s not just about infrastructure—it’s about creating opportunity. We are laying the foundation for a thriving digital economy that supports local innovation, empowers entrepreneurs, and helps Angola optimise its geolocation to elevate its role as a regional technology hub.”

The launch of Raxio Angola strengthens Raxio Group’s position as Africa’s most geographically expansive data centre network. With operational facilities in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, DRC, Côte d’Ivoire and Angola, and plans underway for Tanzania, the company continues to deliver critical digital infrastructure across the continent.
